Biomimicry | Science Collection
Not every graphic tells a story. Some point out that the engineering was already finished before we arrived.
Inspired by Biomimicry, this design represents the practice of solving human design problems by studying how nature solved them first. Velcro came from burrs. Bullet train nose cones came from a kingfisher's beak. Self-cleaning surfaces came from lotus leaves. The discipline rests on a simple observation: every organism alive today is the output of a few billion years of testing, and most of that work is free to read.
The tortoise featured in the artwork is a working demonstration of two separate principles. Its scaled, clawed limbs generate static friction against rope and rock, converting grip into forward motion. Its shell functions as a thermal buffer, absorbing and releasing heat slowly enough to keep the body stable while the air around it swings. Grip and thermal regulation, in one animal, with no moving parts.
The artwork combines detailed natural illustration with sacred-geometry construction lines, friction and heat-transfer equations, and technical annotation, printed in navy and antique gold across the full back on a natural cream body. The centre chest carries the Aukurban shell mark and the line "Inspired by nature." The header reads: Nature perfects, science explains.
Crafted from 240 GSM, 100% premium cotton, this oversized T-shirt combines heavyweight comfort with scientific storytelling, making it more than everyday streetwear. It is designed for those who appreciate biology, engineering, materials science, design, and the idea that observation beats invention.

Design Concept
Biomimicry is the study of biological structures and processes for the purpose of engineering better ones. Rather than treating nature as decoration, it treats nature as a solved problem set.
Two of those solutions appear on this print. Friction, written as F = μₛN, describes the resistance between two surfaces in contact, where μₛ is the coefficient of static friction and N the normal force. It is the reason a tortoise's claws hold a rope and a tyre holds a road, and the reason grip is engineered rather than assumed. Heat transfer, written as Q = mcΔT, describes how much thermal energy a body absorbs or releases for a given change in temperature, where c is specific heat capacity. A shell with high thermal mass changes temperature slowly, which is exactly what a cold-blooded animal in a variable climate needs, and exactly the principle behind thermal-mass architecture.
Friction creates grip. Heat flows, and the system adapts. Neither idea was invented in a lab.
Study the design. Nature published first.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Biomimicry tee about?
It is a cream oversized graphic T-shirt from the Blacklights Aukurban Science Collection. The back print is a biomimicry study built around a tortoise, covering static friction and heat transfer, with the corresponding equations, annotations, and geometric construction lines.
What colour is it?
Natural cream / off-white, with the artwork printed in navy and antique gold.
What fabric is it made from?
240 GSM, 100% premium cotton. It is a heavyweight fabric, so it holds its shape, does not go transparent, and drapes properly in an oversized cut.
What is the fit?
Oversized. It is designed to sit loose through the body with a dropped shoulder. If you prefer a regular fit, size down one.
Which sizes are available?
S, M, L, XL and 2XL.
Is the print on the front or the back?
Both. The Aukurban shell mark sits at the centre chest, and the full tortoise illustration runs across the entire back.
Is it unisex?
Yes. The oversized cut is worn by men and women alike.
How do I get the bundle price?
Add 2 tees for ₹2000 or 3 tees for ₹2500 from the Science Collection and pay via a prepaid method at checkout. Bundle pricing is not available on Cash on Delivery. A single tee gets 10% off on prepaid orders.
Which products count towards the bundle?
Any T-shirts from the Blacklights Science Collection. Cars collection, cord sets and shoes are not part of this offer.
How should I wash it?
Machine wash cold, inside out, with like colours. Do not iron directly over the print. Cream fabric holds stains more visibly than black, so wash it separately the first couple of times.
Where is it made?
Designed and manufactured in New Delhi, India by Blacklights (Aukurban). Shipping across India.
